Goodbye 2014, hello 2015!

It's that time of year again when Christmas has been and the new year is just around the corner. Winter is, by far, my favourite time of the year. There is so much going on and so much excitement. I thoroughly enjoyed christmas this year (having started preparing in October) and I am ready to give 2015 a warm welcome. I won't be going to any new year's eve parties - not that I've been invited to any but I much prefer to spend it with my family watching movies and just being all cosy with the fire on.

I have come up with a good number of new year's resolutions, here is my list:

  1. Drink one litre of water each day
  2. Start writing a book (which I will keep completely to myself)
  3. Read every evening (or most)
  4. Keep a memory jar
  5. Make the most of the whole year and try not to be too miserable that christmas is over :/
  6. Try to be tough and cry less
  7. Update my blog regularly
I really enjoy writing on my blog so I don't exactly know why I don't do it. Nope, there's no excuse. This is why I will be writing on my blog a lot more often and I'll be writing things about lots of different topics. After all, this is my very own corner of the internet and I have the opportunity to do so many things with it. It makes me think of 'How to lose a guy in ten days' where she leaves her job and city because the magazine that she works for won't let her write about real stuff. Here, I can do just that and I want to write about life and real topics as well as reviews and fashion tips. I hope somebody actually reads and appreciates this blog - someone besides my mum.

I hope you're all having a fantastic new year's eve and i wish you the best for 2015,

Emily x

On Saturday afternoon, me and my family took an autumn walk in a beautiful forest near where we live. I absolutely love the orange leaves and the fresh air when your surrounded by so many trees. It really brings autumn alive. I also enjoyed taking some amazing photograph's while is was there, which I thought I'd share with you ;)

Make the most of your autumn.
Best wishes,

making christmas cake

Hey guys! I'm back, at my favourite time of the year! I honestly don't have an excuse as to why I haven't been updating my blog at all over the past few months. I have thought about it but as soon as I got out of the routine of doing it, it seemed almost impossible to start again.  Whenever I opened this page to write something,  my mind just went blank and i simply didn't have the ideas. Fortunately, my imagination is at its peak during the build up to Christmas and, hopefully, i will be bringing you many a blog post.

So, as you can probably tell, I've been making christmas cakes! This is the PERFECT thing to get you in the mood for Christmas. Even though it is almost 2 months away, it's bound to come and go like a flash of lightning - as it does every year. I like to start getting festive super early because, in theory,  it will last longer this way.

I took the recipe for these cakes from the farmhouse kitchen:

Weigh out a total of 850g (I know, it's a lot haha) of a mixture of glacé cherries, currants, raisins and sultanas. I didn't have currants so I just made up the weight with some mixed dried fruit. Each of these bowls have 850g of fruit in as I made two cakes. Carefully distribute 2 tablespoons of brandy or rum over the fruit. Stir with a wooden spoon. Put cling film over the bowl and LEAVE THE FRUIT TO SOAK OVERNIGHT.

All of the ingredients to make the rest of the cake are shown here:

PREHEAT THE OVEN TO 150°C/Gas2/300F

Sift 225g of flour into a bowl
(I got a bit carried away with the photography haha)
Add 1tsp of mixed spice and 100g ground almonds

Weigh 225g of soft brown sugar and put into a separate bowl
(Or pan)
Cream the sugar and 225g butter with a wooden spoon

Whisk 4 eggs

Mix the flour mixture, from earlier, into the soaked fruit

Take the bowl that contains the creamed sugar and butter. Take spoonfus of the flour mixture then egg and stir well, with a wooden spoon, after each addition.

Line a cake tin with greased greaseproof paper and pour in the cake mix. Even the mix out, using a wooden spoon.

I forgot to take pictures of the last step but all you have to do is use string to wrap newspaper around the outide of the tin and cut it so that it sticks up 2 inches above the top of the tin. This is really important,  to ensure that the cake doesn't burn. The paper protects the cake from being burnt as it is in the oven for an extended period of time.

Put the cake in the oven to bake for 3-4 hours until firm and fruit stops 'singing' and 'sissing'. When fully baked, remove the cake from the tin onto a cooling wire. When cold, let it mature for as long as possible. It will keep for up to a year.

When it's closer to Christmas,  I will be decorating the cakes with marzipan and icing as well as some 3D fondant decorations - which I plan on making myself. I should be doing another blog post on how I will decorate them ;)

I will write again very soon (I promise)
Best wishes,
Emily

P.S. All of the photos were taken using my samsung galaxy note 8.0 tablet. It does extremely clear close-up shots and picks up every detail, even the specks of flour. It is just like a regular phone camera when taking selfies or distant shots but it is absolutely perfect for closeups - just in case you were interested ;).

lemon cupcakes :)

Ok, I'll admit that I did use a cake mix for these but that certainly doesn't mean that it didn't take alot of effort; I whisked everything by hand, which took a lot of elbow grease. I got the cake mix (which includes the icing) for about £1 from home bargains, though it does not provide: the eggs, water, butter and vegetable oil. These came with white chocolate sprinkles - mmmmm yummy! I'm quite a fan of cake mixes as they almost always turn out perfect. :D

Unusual book haul♡

I've already seen the first two series of game of thrones and the first hunger games movie, and I really really enjoyed them both. I told myself multiple times that I would read the books as I am a aware that reading these stories is a completely different experience to watching them on the telly. Plus, my bestie wouldn't stop raving about them all. A funny story actually: she kept telling me to look at the books written by George R.R. Martin and each time, i would say 'Georgio Armani? I didn't know you were into high end fashion'. I went shopping with the intention of purchasing one book (maximum two), however when I spotted the complete hunger games series, in a charity shop, for just £2 each (RRP £7.99), I simply couldn't resist. Also, a game of thrones was the book I was most looking forward to, so I had to get that and there was an offer at WHSmith to buy one, get one half price... And that is the story as to why I returned home yesterday, with aching arms and five books - two of which are 2 inches thick each. It was definitely worth it as, despite only having read the first 20 pages, I am completely hooked to 'A game of thrones', by George R.R. Martin. I am absolutely in love this book; the way it is written is extraordinary and I love the little maps in the front where you can look up all the places that are mentioned. Just between you and me, me reading these is also going to aid the conversation between me and a certain boy I know... shhhhh.

♡old baby clothes♡ :D

Looking through the cupboards in your house can prove to be a really enjoyable thing to do; it's surprising, what you can find when you take the time and effort. Over the years, I've seen various tigger and Peter rabbit baby grows of my brother's but nothing much of my own. Finally, it was time for life to give me the opportunity to see all the lovely clothes that i used to wear as a baby. I must say that it was really exciting, going through them all and my heart melted at the sight of them. The ickle trainers still had the dried dog poop on - awwww.
